Insurance Coverage for Gestational Carriers
Intended parents generally cannot add gestational carriers to their existing medical insurance, requiring separate policies.
Gestational carriers need separate insurance coverage because they are not dependents nor have infertility diagnoses, meaning most medical plans won’t cover them
This separate coverage must be surrogacy-friendly to ensure protection throughout the pregnancy
Intended parents’ plans rarely cover medical costs related to the gestational carrier’s pregnancy
Some employers may offer benefits that help with the IVF portion but do not extend to carrier medical insurance
This distinction is critical to avoid uncovered expenses and ensure smooth care for the carrier
Intended parents should plan for independent insurance for carriers to prevent gaps in coverage
The need arises from insurance policy rules that exclude carriers from coverage eligibility
This separate insurance must be identified and secured early in the process to avoid delays or risks
The approach protects the interests of all parties and clarifies financial responsibility upfront
A clear understanding of this insurance gap helps intended parents navigate surrogacy logistics effectively

Hi everyone, Ashley here with an Ask a Surrogate Expert question. This week's question “I'm an intended parent and have great medical insurance. Can I just add my gestational carrier to my insurance?” That's a very common question. Unfortunately, most medical insurance plans do not allow adding a gestational carrier, so separate coverage is needed to make sure everyone is fully protected. The gestational carrier is not a dependent of yours, nor does she have an infertility diagnosis. This is why she needs her own insurance that is surrogacy friendly for the pregnancy. Some employers do have benefits you can use towards the IVF portion. However, it is rare that an IP's insurance covers anything for the gestational carrier. Thanks for the great question.
