Why Families Choose Surrogacy (and Other Paths to Parenthood)
The question “Why didn’t they just adopt?” is one that families who take “nontraditional” paths to parenthood still hear far too often. The truth is, everyone deserves the right to choose how they grow their family — whether that’s through surrogacy, adoption, or another way. Families come in all shapes and sizes, and each one’s journey to parenthood is deeply personal.
Marriage equality may have become law in the United States in 2015, but the fight for equal rights and access to family-building options continues. At Bright Futures Families, inclusivity is a core value. Every family — regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or relationship structure — is supported with respect, compassion, and expert guidance.
Surrogacy for LGBTQ+ Families
Surrogacy offers LGBTQ+ couples and individuals a way to have a child who is biologically related to one or both parents, if that’s something they desire.
In gestational surrogacy, embryos are created using eggs from the intended mother or an egg donor and sperm from the intended father or a sperm donor. These embryos are fertilized via in vitro fertilization (IVF) and transferred to the gestational carrier, who does not share a genetic connection with the baby.
Some male couples may choose to fertilize eggs with sperm from both partners using the same egg donor, allowing each father to be biologically related to one of their children. Female couples sometimes use surrogacy as well — though less commonly — when one or both partners cannot or prefer not to carry a pregnancy.
Other Paths to Parenthood for LGBTQ+ Families
For many female same-sex couples, family building often begins with artificial insemination (IUI) or IVF. Using sperm from either a known donor or a donor selected through a reputable sperm bank, they can conceive through straightforward medical procedures.
Some couples also choose reciprocal IVF, where eggs are retrieved from one partner, fertilized with donor sperm, and the resulting embryo is carried by the other partner. This shared process allows both mothers to have a unique and meaningful biological connection to their child.
Adoption and Other Family-Building Options
Adoption remains another beautiful path to parenthood for LGBTQ+ families. Many inclusive adoption agencies now specialize in or warmly welcome LGBTQ+ parents, offering support through each stage of the process.
At Bright Futures Families, every path — whether surrogacy, adoption, or assisted reproduction — is celebrated. What matters most is that every family has the freedom to grow in the way that feels right for them.
If you’re dreaming of parenthood and are interested in pursuing surrogacy to grow your family, Bright Futures Families is here to help you navigate your journey with expertise and compassion.
