Hi there, this is Ashley Old, Case Manager with Bright Futures Families Surrogacy, with today's Ask question, “What are things people don't usually talk about in surrogacy?” One of the biggest things people don't talk about in surrogacy is just how emotional the journey really is. Surrogacy is often described as this beautiful, life-changing experience, and it absolutely is. But it's also a bit of an emotional roller coaster. There are so many layers to it that it doesn't always get discussed up front. At the center of everything is trust. The intended parents are trusting somebody else to carry their baby and the surrogate is trusting the intended parents. And the process as a whole, this kind of trust is incredible, it's powerful. But it can also feel a little bit scary because so much of it matters to everyone involved. There is also many moments of tension that also mean anything can go wrong. It's just that emotions are super naturally high. Personalities differ and there are many ways to handle many different situations. Everyone cares deeply and sometimes that can show in different ways, whether it's excitement, nervousness, or even uncertainty. Another piece people don't always expect is how much waiting there is. There are many waiting periods at almost every stage of this journey between from starting with matching medical clearance, embryo transfer, and all the different pregnancy milestones. And you know, during those times, it's very common to feel both hope and anxiety at the same time. And there, you know, there's also a real sense of vulnerability on both sides. Surrogates are giving up so much of themselves physically and emotionally, and intended parents are opening their hearts in a very big way too. That level of vulnerability can feel overwhelming at times, even though it's also what makes the journey so meaningful. And times there can be unexpected challenges or even heartbreak along the way. Not every step is guaranteed and that uncertainty alone is extremely hard. But alongside all of that, there are also incredibly meaningful highs like moments of connection, milestones, and ultimately helping create a family. Those moments are what make this journey so special and so worth it for so many people. At the end of the day, surrogacy is such a deeply human experience and feeling all of those emotions, both the highs and the lows, is completely normal.
